Mr. Allmine

Okay. I admit it. I have no recollection at all of Mr. Allmine as a character on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. While he was certainly present in the episode we looked at yesterday (1425 - Key to Otherland), this isn't the first time I've come across Mr. Allmine. Several weeks ago, a black and white photograph of Mr. Allmine popped up on eBay. Having no memory of Mr. Allmine, I saved this image assuming this wasn't the last I'd hear of this name.

Sure enough, there he was in the Key to Otherland opera. I would assume my lack of memory of Mr. Allmine is simply due to the fact that it has been so long since I've seen many of the classic Mister Rogers episodes. Either way, after watching episode 1425, my curiosity was piqued.

According to a comment left on a web site remembering Fred Rogers, "Mr. Allmine was the epitomy [sic] of selfishness and helped us understand those who would not share." TV.com places the appearances of Mr. Allmine in the years 1974-1975.

But that's it, friends. I could find nothing else about Bert Lloyd or his character Mr. Allmine. If anyone has memories, thoughts, information, etc. about Mr. Allmine, please feel free to leave a comment. I'd be curious to know more.

While I don't remember him other than the Otherland opera, I do remember hearing similar descriptions, that he took things and even had a "land of Allmine" or something like that where his siezed objects went. He does seem like a more primative character. While everyone in Make Believe has some strong character traits, they are a bit more well rounded than Mr. Allmine sounds. King Friday, while authoritarian, has his moments of humbleness, and though Lady Elaine is often the antagonist and villain, she also is helpful and resourceful at times. Great post! An interesting forgotten tidbit of the show.

I remember him! Mr. Allmine originally appeared in a week's worth of episodes in 1974 (Shows 1336-1340) where he had stolen Daniel's Clock. His "modus operandi" would be to draw a picture of something he liked in his "All Mine" book, and then take it for himself. He would then justify his actions by saying something like "Everything in this book is all mine." The Neighborhood of Make-Believe made several attempts to persuade Mr. Allmine to return the Clock, but he refused. But then Lady Elaine took a page out of his playbook (no pun intended) to convince him not only to return Daniel's Clock but everything else he had taken. He returned the following year (between shows 1413 & 1414) and assured Lady Aberlin & Daniel that he has reformed himself. Although he no longer takes things, he is still interested in things. As a gesture of friendship, he invites them to the Land of Allmine to visit his new Museum. However, this creates a bit of worry, as they don't tell anyone where they're going beforehand. After a sweeping search of the area (including Someplace Else), Purple Panda eventually returns Lady Aberlin, Daniel & Mr. Allmine to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe safe and sound. Mister Rogers later explains that you should never go anywhere on your own without asking your parents' permission first, especially if it's with another adult. Most of this information was culled episode summaries at TV.com (which then jogged some of my own memories). It's a great resource.

Thanks for the details (I use TV.com all the time...not sure why I didn't think to look there for more information). I'd also be curious to know more about Bert Lloyd himself if anyone has anything there...

I wonder if he was portrayed as some sort of villain, which would be unusual for the Neighborhood, or whether he was more of a naughty child who needed to be reformed (much like Lady Elaine usually is). Hey Tim, how bout a post on Mr. Anybody too?

I don't think I have any footage of Mr. Anybody...but let me see what I can come up with...

I remember Mr. Allmine! But only in a very vague sense; you see, this is my first childhood memory. I was born in 1973, and for some reason, my earliest memory is Mr. Allmine! I don't remember details, but the name and the essence (sharing, not sharing) sticks with me. I'm sure I could trigger more memories if i could find the missing clock episodes. I've been looking for over 10 years!! Hope to find them some day..

Jayson -- I understand. Some of my earliest childhood memories are saturated with Sesame Street!
