Neighbor Scott’s Pittsburgh Visit

Many thanks to guest blogger, Scott...

Three weeks ago, my family and I drove out to Pittsburgh to see some of the Mister Rogers attractions. I received the idea to visit Pittsburgh from David Newell, who appeared at my church as Mr. McFeely during the summer. While driving around with him for two days, he suggested that Pittsburgh would be a good family vacation destination. And so we took him up on the suggestion and planned a Pittsburgh trip.

Our young children (2yrs and 3yrs) are huge MRN fans. Since our trip coincided with our younger son’s 2nd birthday, we spent his actual birthday at the Monroeville Mall Play area, documented on the Neighborhood Archive Blog. I learned about the playground from Tim’s blog—thanks Tim for reporting it! We enjoyed a Mrs. Field’s Cookie Birthday Cake at the Mall. Sarah, a Mrs. Field’s employee, did a great job putting the Neighborhood Trolley on the cookie.

We stayed in Pittsburgh for 3 full days. During that time, we visited the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, which features an interactive MRN exhibit. We also visited the Heinz History Museum, a fascinating museum which even included a newly completed life-sized wax statue of Fred. Our boys really enjoyed looking (and climbing) on the Fred Rogers statue on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. Last but not least, we were even able to visit WQED.

Pittsburgh is definitely a Mister Rogers’ town. It’s hard to go anywhere without seeing his picture. For example, for lunch one day we ate at Primanti Brothers, a famous Pittsburgh sandwich restaurant. Guess whose cartoon picture we saw on the wall, with lots of other famous Pittsburgh citizens?

Since our boys love trolleys, on the way out of town, we stopped by the PA Trolley Museum in Washington, PA. Mister Rogers visited this museum in episode 1531. Jack, our tour guide, pointed to us the exact trolley Mister Rogers drove on the episode.

There were a few more MRN theme attracts that we weren’t able to see. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the MRN planetarium exhibit (at Carnegie Science Center) since the show times/dates didn’t coincide with the dates we were in town. The miniature railroad, also at Carnegie, was closed for remodeling. There is supposed to be a miniature version of Mister Rogers’ House on the layout. Of course, Idlewood Park was closed for the season. Idlewood has a MRN themed ride. I called the Fred Rogers Center in Latrobe, and the employee there was very honest with me and said that there wasn’t much available for the public to see, so it probably wasn’t worth the 45 minute trip.

Pittsburgh is a great family town. If you’re interested in taking a trip out East, I’d recommend spending a few days visiting the MRN and other attractions. You won’t be disappointed.

I have often wondered if the house and NOMB set is a lot smaller than we all think it is. Sometimes things look a lot bigger than we imagined them being.

I disagree with there not being much at the Mister Rogers Center. I went there last year and we didn't hve enough time to look at everything. They have Mr. Rogers sweaters and shoes, his puppets, Daniel's clock, his record albums, scripts and music to the shows, they have videos of MRN you can watch, and lots of other MRN stuff. I took lots of pictures if you want me to send them to you so you can see what they have.

The Fred Rogers Center at Saint Vincent College is DEFINITELY worth the visit. It was a huge highlight for me and my youngest daughter. You will see Fred's handwritten musical scores and notes from college, the earliest of his puppets, Daniel's large clock as well as touch screen video monitors to watch vintage MRN. It's wonderful and you really must make the trip back!

Scott, was the climb-on trolley piece back at the Monroeville mall play area? It was missing when we last visited in July, unfortunately. It is such a key piece, I sure hope it has been reinstalled. The play area is really nice and I hope to get back before my daughter outgrows it.

Sorry to monopolize, but I really am sad that the Fred Rogers Center employee was "honest" with you because HONESTLY, they either were not honest, or they honestly cannot see the value in their collection. IT's really lovely with so much to offer, I find it hard to believe they could be so dismissive of it.

Mike: I thought the Castle seemed smaller than on TV, but the Tree was just as big as I expected. Funny how TV can distort sizes, isn't it?

Vickie: yes, the climb-on trolley was at the Monroeville mall...my boys had a great time pretending they were riding on the trolley. I thought that the tree was pretty impressive.

Vickie and Anonymous: Thanks for the feedback on the Fred Rogers Center. Too bad we didn't make the trip after all. If you have pictures beside whats on their website, please do post.

Sounds like a great trip! I would also recommend the Elizabeth Nesbitt room at the University of Pittsburgh Library. They have almost the entire series to watch, including the vintage episodes. I watched a special episode about RFK's assassination. There were some technical issues with some tapes, but I was able to watch several good classics. Here is the link.

If the link doesn't work, just google "Elizabeth Nesbitt room Mr. Rogers"

Scott, I have many pictures of the center I'd love to share with you. And how wonderful to hear the good news of the trolley at the mall. What a shame we missed it on our trip last July. Of all times to have it be missing, on our trek from Illinois! There really is so much FR in all of Pittsburgh. Such a wonderful city.
Here is a link to an album I've shared on Facebook. I'll make it public so that you may view it. If you have any problems, please let me know and I'll email them to you if you'd like. This is not nearly all the photos I took! I have gobs more!

And Scott, no reason to feel too badly about missing the Fred Rogers Center because you MUST come back to visit Idlewild Park anyway! They will be "must do" things for you next trip. You will surely cry when you take your first trolley ride through Idlewild's Neighborhood of Make-Believe.
