If you could find the call letters of that NPR station you could do an extensive search on the internet for a possible aircheck of that particular program. It's a shame that Fred didn't pursue this any further. NPR would have been a great medium for him to expand to. Radio programming is actually better in my opinion. You're forced to imagine what's going on. NPR did a special I think 1981 or 1980 of the Star Wars Radio Drama.
I agree with Mike wish we had something like this today it would be perfect for the car ride or travel all of those book tapes were great when I was a kid and still are as they are on CD and my Ipod those were like the radio thanks for this blog and the Grandparents week

I spent some time searching online for more information about the Neighborhood Weekend but came up empty. Anything more than what is described in this article would be great!
How very interesting. This was news to me!
Wow! I've never even heard this mentioned. It would be interesting to find out how long it went on, as it doesn't ever come up in official FCI timelines or anything.
I searched under Susan Stamberg+Mister Rogers and came up with a little bit of info. Susan Stamberg used to call on Fred (on radio) to discuss world events. Also Susan did some television work with Fred right around the 1979/1980 time frame.
Something to consider - the Sony Walkman was introduced in 1979. Fred may have thought this was a new medium/audience to go after. Transistor Radios were becoming very popular too.
