Christmastime with Mister Rogers [1977]

Memorial Day is typically the unofficial start of summer. The grills are hot, the pools are cool, and (hopefully) the sun is shining. I'm not sure what it's like in your neighborhood, but here in mine it's supposed to be 97 degrees with sunny skies.

Summer is definitely here.

So what better to talk about as we enter the warmest months of the year?

Let's talk about Christmas.

Rather than wait until December, I thought I'd go ahead and take a look at the 1977 special that many people are curious about and most have never seen -- Christmastime with Mister Rogers.

Fantastic! This is the one show I wonder about the most! Thanks for posting it. I hope it finds a release one day.

Guy -- I hope so, too. This would be a great one for any MRN fan to watch during the holidays.

I'll say. I've been wanting to see this for ever since I heard about it. I wish someone could put this special up on the internet or something.

Something I'm wondering. Why wasn't there any snow in either Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, or in Make Believe?

Really surprised to see the name Kathleen Ankers in the credit for scenic design. She was actually a fairly major name in network television for that line of work. She designed the sets for MANY daytime shows--game shows and soap operas--based in New York from the 50s through the 80s. She also designed the sets for all of David Letterman's shows, as well as the sets for Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, and Craig Ferguson on CBS.

Curious what she could have built for this show. Everything in the screencaps seems familiar to me. What original sets were in the special?

Maybe the scenes from the dream/story sequences? Other than that, most of the special takes place at Mister Rogers' house or at the Theater.

All I can say is WHOAAAAAA!!!! There are some wonderful surprises as far as the credits are concerned. Such as Betty Aberlin credited as Casting, and the bigger shock was none other than Tom Savini, the man who created Jason Vorhees of Friday The 13th fame, created for doing the LEF skater's makeup for the special.

I just noticed something. Stanley Clay/Music Man. I take it as a connection to the new DTN coming out?

Dan -- I don't think there's any connection between the Music Man character here and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. My guess is just coincidence.

As for the credits, thanks for the details. I'm not too familiar with many of the behind-the-scenes names so I've enjoyed hearing from folks about the names that stand out. How about Don (Chef) Brockett as the skate choreographer!

Then you got Francis Bay, who on the special played Mrs. Hamilton, was best known as Adam Sandlers' Grandmother un Happy Gilmore, as well as The Fonz's "Grandma Numsbaum" in Happy Days.
