GIFTS FOR KIDS

So your kids have caught on to the fact that Daniel Tiger wasn't the first to sing the words "won't you be my neighbor" and they've caught the Mister Rogers bug that seems to be going around? Some terrific new books have hit shelves this fall specifically geared towards the younger market.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: The Poetry of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood

I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough! Not only was it one of the first this year to help get this Neighborhood resurgence in full swing, the combination of Fred Rogers' song lyrics presented as poetry and the amazing artwork of Luke Flowers will not disappoint any reader -- young or old.

If my own kids are any indication of the popularity of the "Who Was...?" series of biographical books, the new title about Mister Rogers and his Neighborhood is sure to please your young reader!

You can't resist a classic. Seriously. If you grew up in the 1970s or 1980s, you probably had the original edition of this Little Golden Book on your bookshelf. Although the cover art has been slightly updated, the content of the story and the artwork inside are exactly the same as they were a few decades ago. This would be a great book to read with your children -- especially if you are able to share with them that you read this book yourself as a child!

This is a charming book to share with the children in your life. Essentially, it is a very concise biography of Fred Rogers in a simple children's storybook format filled with beautiful illustrations. If you'd like, you can even get an audio version of the book read by Bronson Pinchot ... although he does not read it as Balki Bartokomous.

If kids know Mister Rogers, there's no doubt that they also know Daniel Tiger. In fact, it's more than likely that they knew Daniel first. Either way, Snowflake Songs is a great book to read (and sing) along with on a snowy winter day. The buttons on the side allow for the tunes to be played as you and your children sing along!

Daniel Tiger Ornaments

It's tradition for my kids to chose a new ornament each year to add to our Christmas tree.
Most calendars are kept on digital devices these days and paper calendars seem to be on the road to becoming as obsolete as a TV Guide, but there's still that space on your grandmother's wall that would be naked without a calendar. One has hung there for decades and with each new year, she takes down the old and replaces it with the new. This year, rather than letting her hang the free calendar she picked up at the bank or the one she bought for for $25 from the kid down the street raising money for his travel sports team, why not let Mister Rogers and his wisdom walk her month by month through 2020?

SOMETHING FUN

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Coffee Mugs

Much like the market for Neighborhood socks (as you'll see later), the options when it comes to Mister Rogers coffee mugs are certainly plentiful! Of the new ones to hit shelves this fall, my favorites are probably the new color-changing options -- one black and one white. They work in the same way as the popular sweater-changing mug from a few years ago -- pour in a hot liquid and watch the mug's design change. If you're interested in the countless other mugs on the market, visit the Neighborhood Archive site for details.

'It's a Beautiful Day' Puzzles

I admit it. I like puzzles. I think they're relaxing and a good excuse to waste away a lazy afternoon every once in a while. If you've got the patience for puzzle completion and the daring nature willing to take a chance of small pieces being lost to the vacuum or family pet, there are two fun new puzzles available this holiday season -- one from Aquarius and another from Buffalo Games.

Everyone needs a small Mister Rogers figurine that talks to them, right?! Seriously, this thing is pretty fun as a push on the Neighborhood Trolley brings Fred's familiar voice to your ears with words of song and wisdom. It's sort of an updated version of the Mister Rogers In Your Pocket from several years ago.

If you've always dreamed of following Mister Rogers' lead by coming home from work and changing into a warm sweater before settling for some time of quiet reflection, you're in luck. You can now pick up your own replica sweater designed after those worn by Fred Rogers on the Neighborhood program! Since this item has become available, I've often been asked about its quality. Is it a cheap costume piece or a quality sweater you could actually wear? I assure you friends and neighbors, this is a legit sweater -- thick and very well made.

Full disclosure. Yes, I was one of the co-authors of this book, but I don't include it at the top of this list because my name is attached to it. I do so because it's awesome! Really, if you're buying a gift for someone who would appreciate an in-depth look at the history of the Neighborhood with never-before-seen photographs and first-hand interviews with cast and crew members, this is the book for you. On a side note, if you can hold off until early December, I will likely have signed copies available for purchase through the Neighborhood Archive site. That's assuming you'd want me to scribble inside your book with a Sharpie in the first place.

Ignoring the fact that it's simply a re-titled book with the poster for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood slapped on the cover, I've included it here for the simple reason that it now includes the full essay written by Tom Junod in 1998 for Esquire magazine. This essay, of course, is the basis for the movie's plot.

When I think of stocking stuffers, I think of candy, lip balm, and socks. You've probably seen the Mister Rogers Encouragemints which have been out there for a while, and I'm not quite sure how Neighborhood lip balm would even be marketed, but socks? You're covered. You could give a different pair of Mister Rogers socks to each of your family members over two full generations and you'd likely not run out of options. Seriously. There are a lot of socks out there. Visit the Neighborhood Archive site or click on the image below for specific options.

According to this description, at one point in the episode Mister Rogers "talks about how he is sometimes angered by Mr. McFeely's smoking."

Wait. What?!

Unfortunately, at that time there was no easy way to verify this information one way or the other. But it was detailed in this official academic catalogue, so it had to be true! Right? I mean, this episode was filmed in the late 1960s -- a time when smoking was much more socially acceptable than it is today.

Maybe Mr. McFeely was a indeed a smoker.

Not long after that, I had the opportunity for one of my first conversations directly with the staff of the Fred Rogers Company (now Fred Rogers Productions) -- some of whom would have been working on the Neighborhood program at that time.

But no one remembered anything. The response I got was one of curiosity but uncertainty. Sort of a "I don't think so. But maybe... I don't know."

It wasn't long after that when, with the help of the Fred Rogers Company, I began filling in gaps in the episode details found on the Neighborhood Archive site.

You'd better believe one of the first episodes I asked to see was Episode 0037! As I viewed the episode for the first time, I can't say I was surprised to find that there was no mention anywhere in the episode of Mr. McFeely (or anyone else) smoking.

With this new information -- or lack thereof -- the mystery continued as urban legends began to develop. The most common theory that surfaced was that a scene with Mr. McFeely smoking was originally in the episode but was replaced with new footage when the harmful effects of smoking started to be taken more seriously.

Pitched once again to those at the Fred Rogers Company, this theory could not be confirmed. In fact, at this time I learned that the University of Pittsburgh had been contacted about this content and expressed that the information in their system could not be changed. So even if the legend of the smoking Speedy Deliveryman was ultimately debunked, editing this information would require a significant amount of effort.

That's where the story stalled for many years -- with so many questions left unanswered.

Was Mr. McFeely ever a smoker? Was this originally part of a Neighborhood episode or not? Was this footage replaced? If so, is the original footage still in existence anywhere?

Fast forward to the late summer of 2019 -- over fifty years after Episode 0037 originally aired. It was at this time that an unexpected contact through Instagram opened the door to this mystery being solved once and for all!

We'll call the person who contacted me "J" so as to prevent a visit from the NIA (Neighborhood Intelligence Agency). J is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and, in the summer of 1994, he was one of the people responsible for writing the episode descriptions for the University Library System's online catalogue (called PittCat at the time). At that time, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was still in production as he and a co-worker began with documenting current episodes and working their way back to those from 1968.

According to J, the summaries in PittCat were transcribed from forms originally written by Fred Rogers himself. Each form listed a brief description of the episode as well as any characters and contributors for the episode. The episode entries were created using a networked CRT monitor and took roughly 15-20 minutes to prepare and type each one.

What I found most interesting about this process was J's confirmation that any errors -- deliberate or accidental -- could not be corrected after the entry was submitted due to the fact that the information was then transmitted to the Library of Congress. When an item (regardless of the medium) was added to the Pitt collection, the first step of documentation was to see if a Library of Congress record already existed for that specific title. In the case of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, of course, there was no Library of Congress record; hence, the need for J and his co-worker to create the entries. Once completed, the records were submitted to the OCLC (Online Catalogue of the Library of Congress). Pitt is considered a Federal Depository Library so the law requires this information to be shared with the Library of Congress. Once submitted, entries cannot be changed without official Library of Congress approval.

So back to Mr. McFeely and his alleged smoking habit.

As the process of entering information for each Neighborhood episode neared completion, J was growing tired of the tedium and found himself taking more frequent cigarette breaks. One morning, he was called into the office of his supervisor and reprimanded for his excessive time away from his responsibilities. In a passive-aggressive response to this confrontation, J wrote a line in the description for Episode 0037 about Mr. McFeely smoking.

The rest, friends and neighbors, is history.
Teased with the idea of a Neighborhood game in Episode 1515 and Episode 1604, this is more a card game than a board game.

Buffalo Games has packaged this new Neighborhood game into a sturdy and colorful box featuring the unmistakable image of Mister Rogers' sweater and tie. Initially, this game is only available at Target or through Target.com. We'll see if it becomes more widely distributed in the near future.

So what's in the box?

Let's start with the least interesting of the contents -- the instruction book. The covers uses the same image as the outside of the box and the instructions go into great detail about game play.

What I find most interesting about the game instructions is the target age range -- ages 10 and up. While most younger kids today are more familiar with Daniel Tiger than they are Mister Rogers, this game is certainly appropriate for players much younger than the age of ten. The first time it's played, younger players will certainly need an older player to explain the game to them, but with the rules in place, this simple game is absolutely one that could be played with kids in a much younger age range. I'd go as far as to suggest ages 5 and up.

One of the oddest items included in the game box is a thank you note from Mister Rogers.

The note -- obviously not actually from Mister Rogers -- is found inside a sealed red envelope and features the following quote: "It's the things we play with and the people who help us play that make a great difference in our lives."

While this was an unexpected addition to the game's contents, I feel like it's a bit odd. It just seems like a lot of trouble to go to in order to include this quote within the game. Why bother printing a card and even sealing it in an envelope when the quote could just have easily been printed directly on the box or the instructions? It was a kind of cool to find this in the box, but it just seems like a very unnecessary addition.

The best part of the game? The playing cards!

Check out those amazing illustrations! In many ways, they rival the images recently printed as t-shirts and stickers by Pittsburgh's Steel City!

I'd love to know more about these illustrations if anyone reading happens to have any information. Who is behind them? How was it determined which characters to use and which ones to leave out?

I have questions, people.

[UPDATE: Illustrations on the playing cards were done by Jerrod Maruyama]

With all of the contents out of the box, the words "Won't you be my neighbor?" are revealed. [Now this is where that quote from the thank you note could have been printed.]

Cost? Full price is around twenty bucks -- although I've seen it as low as $16.99. Maybe a bit much for a simple card game.

So is the game worth your while? Yeah, I think so. I wouldn't say it's for everyone, though. It's certainly not a game that teenagers and adults would want to play with their friends on a game night -- it's way too simple for that. But is it a game that a family with younger children could play together on a game night? Absolutely. Not only is it a game appropriate for that sort of dynamic, the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Game is also a great opportunity to introduce younger players to the Neighborhood that paved the way for Daniel Tiger.

Most recently was the addition of t-shirts and stickers featuring illustrations of six characters from the Neighborhood of Make-Believe -- X the Owl, Henrietta Pussycat, Daniel Striped Tiger, Lady Elaine Fairchilde, Queen Sara Saturday, and King Friday XIII. A Neighborhood Trolley sticker is also available.
I have a super soft New York Knicks shirt (yes, I'm a Knicks fan) that is among the most comfortable t-shirts I have ever owned. If you're wondering about the quality of the shirts from Steel City, I can assure you that my Knicks shirt now has some serious competition!

Many times, shirts with large graphics are quite uncomfortable. Maybe you know what I mean. Have you ever worn a shirt like that? It's a hot day and a nice breeze cuts through the air -- but you wouldn't know it because the heavy screenprint on your shirt does nothing but serve as a wind resistant shield to your suffocating torso.

Not these shirts. No, no, no. These shirts are comfy. None of that heavy material and thick print here!

And the stickers?

You know as well as I do that your laptop would look amazing with King Friday or Lady Elaine staring down coffee shop onlookers.

Having seen countless pieces of Neighborhood memorabilia over the years, it's no exaggeration when I say that what's come from Steel City are some of the best! Fire up those pre-orders and make room on your bookshelves, neighbors...there are plenty of Neighborhood books headed your way in 2019!
These products are far more than the simple (and often poorly made and poorly designed) t-shirts you'd find at Target or Hot Topic. Not only is the quality of their products outstanding, Steel City is (obviously) invested in the culture of Pittsburgh making these products somewhat of a labor of love.

While there are a ton of t-shirts available through Steel City, I chose to give a closer look at their other Neighborhood products. That said, I do have a t-shirt from Steel City and I can say in all honesty that it's one of the most comfortable t-shirts I've ever owned. But let's look at some other products.

The cardigan coffee mug is heavy duty and ready for your morning cup of coffee. The back of the mug features a line familiar text: "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood," but the cardigan design is certainly the big draw here. A very simple, yet creative design sure to spark a few conversations in your office break room.

The hats offered by Steel City are easily my favorite items among this great line of products. While I don't recall Mr. McFeely every wearing a cap in this style, the color of this strap-back cap and the patch are spot on with what you'd find on his regular uniform.

The Neighborhood logo cap is simple and well made, but it's certainly my least favorite of the Steel City head wear options.

My favorite? That's a tough one. Of the three strapbacks, it'd have to be the Handyman Negri cap. It's a terrific replica of the style regularly worn around the Neighborhood of Make-Believe by Mr. Negri himself.

The beanie, though. The beanie! It's thick, it's warm, and it's such a fun product to cover your chilly noggin! Worth every last penny of its $20 price tag.

And who doesn't need a pair of Neighborhood socks?

This is one of three sock varieties offered by Steel City. You can check out the others, as well as their many original Neighborhood t-shirt designs by visiting their spot in the Neighborhood Archive or by browsing their website -- shopsteelcity.com

From my neighborhood to yours, Steel City's Neighborhood line comes highly recommended!

These are my new friends, Eleanor and Ben.

Eleanor and Ben contacted me a few weeks ago after reading the article about my Mister Rogers collection that ran in the newspaper back in February. Over the phone, Eleanor mentioned that they had something to contribute to my personal "archive."

Today, just before I picked up my son from his martial arts camp (or "ninja camp," depending on who you're talking to), I met up with my new friends in a nearby Walgreen's parking lot. After introducing ourselves, Eleanor presented me with a homemade envelope which had been carefully sealed by weaving ribbon through holes punched along the edges.

Inside were the piece of a well-loved Playtime Puppet Theater! These stick puppets had belonged to their children who, according to Eleanor and Ben, put on countless puppet shows for them several decades ago. The fun that was had with these puppets was evident in every crease, every worn edge, and every repair made with tape.

As I collect Neighborhood memorabilia, I try my best to find items that are in the best condition possible. This collection, however, is a very welcomed exception to the rule. It gives me such a good feeling to hold these puppets that were once used by children playing the parts of characters from King Friday to Edgar Cooke.

Adding to the charm, the original price tag remains on the front.

$1.14 at K-Mart.

Many thanks to Eleanor and Ben for going out of their way to share their story with me!

Since then, I've received several inquiries as to how others might order a similar print of their own. After contacting the artist, here's how:

1. Make at least a one-time donation of minimum of $5 to the PBS member station of your choice. This can easily be done online HERE.

2. Send the receipt from your donation to Owen at owenlhjphillips@gmail.com. It should look something like this.

3. Owen will send you a hi-res image.

4. Upload the image to the photo printing site of your choice to create your own print. I used Sam's Club for the canvas I had made.

Easy as that, Neighbors!

In case you missed anything, here's a run-down of the major events over the last week:

Fred Rogers' 90th Birthday

Tuesday we celebrated the 90th birthday of Fred Rogers. People across the nation wore sweaters and encouraged/performed acts of neighborly kindness -- something we should all remember to do every day.

Well, maybe not the sweaters.

Twitch Marathon

Tuesday also marked the (unexpected) beginning of another Twitch marathon! Starting with a series of favorite episodes, the marathon has currently reached the point of moving through all Neighborhood episodes in sequential order. Check it out on Twitch!

USPS Stamp Release

The long-awaited Mister Rogers postal stamp was release on Friday with a celebratory ceremony held at the WQED building in Pittsburgh.

This official event was shared live on Facebook, if you missed it.

. . .

As for me, it's been a wonderful week away with my family! I unplugged as much as possible (something I'd encourage all of you to try from time to time) and enjoyed several days in the Orlando area at Walt Disney World with the rest of the week spent on the beach further south in Bradenton.

We're (finally) home now -- safe and sound back to the Midwest where we were greeted with six inches of snow! Thanks to all of you faithful Neighborhood Archive readers for allowing me to step away for a few days!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5155808471225067387.post-53453747775235273662018-03-16T09:38:00.002-05:002018-03-16T09:38:32.158-05:00Spring Break

In an interview with Fred Rogers, he once made the following comment about television:

"We don't have to have this sound and picture 24 hours a day. Turn off the Neighborhood. Turn off whatever's there. And play."

My wife and I are both school employees and our kids, of course, go to school. Spring break has arrived and, extending Fred's thoughts to other time consuming forms of media, I'll be unplugging for a week to enjoy the break with my family.

See you in a week, neighbors!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5155808471225067387.post-84466391281657203602018-03-03T14:16:00.000-06:002018-03-03T14:16:08.202-06:00Bob Brubach: The First Black & White PandaAfter my recent converastion with Randy and Bill on Pittsburgh's 102.5 WDVE Morning Show, I received an email with the title "Info on Black & White Panda."

Interesting. What an obscure character.

Opening the email, I saw the thumbnails for the attached images and immediately knew that I was in for a treat!

The message was from Bill Brubach, the brother of Bob Brubach who appeared twice in the credits for Neighborhood episodes -- specifically episodes featuring the circus -- but I'd not yet been able to place what part he had played. Bill's email clued me in with the following details:

[Bob] was a young dancer and performer that Don Brockett and Joe Negri "discovered" in high school performances at Pittsburgh's South Hills Catholic High School (now Seton-LaSalle HS). While in high school he starred in several shows alongside Lisa Negri, Joe's daughter.

Bob was a performer in some of Don Brockett's summer stock productions at that time -- and I guess Mr. Rogers told Don that he was looking for a "dancing Panda" to accompany Purple Panda on several episodes. Don brought in my brother Bob, and he was immediately cast in the role. (We always called his role "the Dancing Panda," but I understand the show referred to his character as "Black and White Panda" on several occasions.)

I was a few years younger than Bobby, but I remember his stories about how hot the Panda costume was, and that he was doing silly dance moves under hot lights over and over again -- but how much fun he was having doing it.

Anyway, Bobby went on to perform in several Broadway plays, including "The Magic Show" with Doug Henning, and later as an original cast member in the Tony Award-Winning "La Cage aux Folles." His bio in the Magic Show Playbill even listed his appearance on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood among his theatrical credits!

Unfortunately, Bobby passed away on Christmas Day in 1988 at the age of 33. Even though he was so young when he died, he had lived a full and fulfilling life, touring the world as a dancer, singer and performer. He was a proud Pittsburgher and fan of Fred Rogers -- and a memorable alumnus of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

My thanks to Bill.
Black & White Panda.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5155808471225067387.post-10256576202108346022018-02-18T17:50:00.002-06:002019-04-09T10:22:56.334-05:0050 Years: Celebrate You

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood debuted nationally on February 19, 1968 -- approximately eight and a half years before I was born. I had graduated from college and completed a master's degree by the time the final Neighborhood visit initially aired in 2001.

That's a long time.

As we celebrate this 50th anniversary of the Neighborhood we've all come to love and appreciate so much, I ask you one question: "Why?"

Why was Mister Rogers' Neighborhood so important?

I'm not talking about nostalgia. I'm not talking about groundbreaking children's television.

I'm talking about you.

Why are you celebrating the Neighborhood? What's your story?

Really. Look past the puppets and the cardigan. Past Mr. McFeely and the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. What is it about Mister Rogers' Neighborhood that has struck such a worldwide chord that we're celebrating the anniversary of a program that many have labeled for years as dated, soft, and boring?

Mister Rogers presented his television neighbors with the same message during each and every Neighborhood visit: "You make each day a special day by just your being you." Despite the blemish on your cheek. Despite a few extra pounds. Despite your glasses or your nervous feeling around others. Despite your crooked teeth or your smelly feet or your single-parent household or your lack of financial stability or your self-doubt...

You are special.

You.

This is what we all long to hear regardless of our age, gender, ethnicity, background, or nationality. If you say you don't need to hear someone you love tell you that you are special -- that you are important -- consider me first in line to say you're fooling yourself.

Everyone longs to feel valuable. Everyone longs to feel loved.

Mister Rogers' message of peace, love, acceptance, and self-worth is one that is foreign to most -- an awkward topic that is not easily discussed. Society has conditioned us toward dissatisfaction with ourselves and a constant desire to fit the mold of expectation set before us.

We should act a certain way.

Dress a certain way.

Look a certain way.

Feel a certain way.

The pastor of my church recently delivered a message including a question that hit home as I think about the value Fred Rogers placed on self-worth: "When you look in the mirror, do you see the stuff you want to change, or do you see the beauty there to be celebrated?"

As we celebrate fifty years of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, I hope you are looking in the mirror, remembering Fred Rogers' message, and celebrating you.
Here's a rundown of two incredible days in Mister Rogers' real neighborhood.

. . .

On the first day, I met up with my friend Derek at 9:30 for a late breakfast. Those of you who know me personally know my love of The Homeless Gospel Choir.

That's Derek.

Check out his music sometime.

Derek and I scarfed down our food and coffee at Piper's Pub while we solved many of the world's problems. At Derek's recommendation, I went with the fried chicken and sausage on a waffle.

With gravy.

Although my 42-year-old arteries likely disagree, it was glorious.

From there, we were disappointed to find that the Fred Rogers statue down by the river was boxed and the site was closed for construction. Instead, we decided to spend much of the day hitting up record stores, coffee shops, and the famous Mineo's Pizza.

Near the end of the day, we found our way to the Heinz History Center to check out the Neighborhood exhibit -- a site worth seeing if you're ever in Pittsburgh. I won't pretend you're here to read about record stores and food, so here are several shots from the exhibit.
The next day was spent meeting with the fine folks of the Fred Rogers Company.
. . .

So let's get down to it. What kinds of things were discussed at the Fred Rogers Company that I can share here.

The upcoming PBS special?

It's terrific. I was able to see a portion of the special and I assure you that if your DVRs are not currently set to record on March 6th, you need to remedy this immediately! While the documentary that recently premiered at Sundance focused on the life and career of Fred Rogers, the PBS special is centered around the Neighborhood program itself. Very different and very well done!

Were there episodes of the Neighborhood -- besides the Conflict series -- that were banned from broadcast for potentially controversial reasons?

There were not. While it is widely believed that there are several chunks of episodes which were "banned" at some point over the years, I was assured that the only reason something like this may have happened would have been because there were simply more episodes than days to air them. No controversy.

Another Twitch marathon?

Hang in there.

Other methods of viewing Neighborhood episodes? Not just the ones on Amazon but all of them.

Not out of the question. Don't give up hope.

What about physical DVD copies of the episodes?

My recommendation to you would be that if you want DVDs of more than what is currently available, buy this box set of 30 episodes when it is released. If the demand for more is clear, we may see more. If not, we'll see the Neighborhood DVDs go the way of the Old School Sesame Street DVDs ... gone after just a few volumes.

. . .

The biggest news of the day, from my side of things, comes in the form of an "official" endorsement of the Neighborhood Archive by the Fred Rogers Company. At this point, it's safe to share with you all that I have been working in partnership with the FRC for a few years now as the Archive site has continued to grow. As they shared some of their plans for the near future with me, it was suggested that this cooperative effort has certainly evolved to the point of an "official" partnership with some exciting opportunities for us to collaborate in documentation of "all things Mister Rogers."

What does this mean for you?

Here's one example of things you haven't seen here before that may start popping up more often ... the pre-68 footage ... MisteRogers' Neighborhood, The Children's Corner...

Beyond that, stay tuned. :)

. . .

When I started this site just over nine years ago, I had no idea it would ever be at the point it is today. I'm continually humbled by the traffic it receives and dedicated readership that it's gained. I look forward to this official partnership with the Fred Rogers Company and eagerly anticipate sharing as much as possible with all of you!
Count Me In!Obviously, the big news from today is the announcement that Tom Hanks will play the part of Fred Rogers in the long-time-coming biopic, You Are My Friend. For the life of me, I didn't see this writing on the wall, but as a longtime fan of Tom Hanks, this announcement was immediately intriguing.

Reading the fan response, however, this casting choice has been made to mixed reviews.

"What about Jim Parsons?" seems to be the most common argument of contention...but was that ever anything more than a rumor when talk of a biopic first hit the news a few years ago? Sure, from a visible perspective, Parsons could easily slip on the sneakers and portray a convincing Mister Rogers. I even chatted about this with a few pals on Episode 020 of the Neighborhood Archive podcast back in 2013.

But check out the fine print.

This movie doesn't seem to be a simple biographical account of Fred Rogers and his life. According to Tom Junod, the film is to be "loosely based on the article [he] wrote for Esquire 20 years ago."

His article was based on interactions with Fred at a time most would recognize as the Neighborhood's later years. With this in mind, a mid-40s Jim Parsons doesn't seem right to fill the role of a man in his late 60s; certainly not as well as a versatile actor like Tom Hanks -- a man currently close to Fred's age at that time.

Keep in mind, it doesn't seem that this film is intended to be a simple biography but rather the story of a relationship. While I'm guessing there will be plenty of flashbacks to Fred's younger years, the focal time period of this film appears to be the later years of Fred's life.

If that's the case, I'm 100% on board with the casting of Tom Hanks -- a man who has never done anything but fully immerse himself in every role he's been given.

Consider me intrigued.

Speaking of PBS, it looks like a new DVD box set is ready for pre-order! It's not a complete series release like I know many are hoping to see someday, but it's at least 30 classic episodes in one collection for a very reasonable price!
Additionally, PBS will be pairing episodes of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood with classic episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood from February 26- March 2. Again, check your local listings.
And that biography that's we've been hearing about? It's coming early this fall as The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers is set for a September 11 publication.

I told you.

We're in for quite a Neighborhood resurgence this year!

. . .

Speaking of Michael Keaton, as most of you know, he began his career in entertainment as a member of the Neighborhood's studio crew in the 1970s. This week, the Flying Zookeeni Brothers have come up in conversation a few times and I've been happy to recall my favorite characters in all of the Neighborhood's 895 episodes!

If you can't tell, that's Michael Keaton third from the right...known then as Michael Douglas.

...

This week has brought several new items to the Archive collection. Sure, I already own several of these items in some form, but I'm a self-proclaimed completist!

The Songbook is a copy with the dust jacket, the bath book is in its original packaging, and the Monsters storybook is a variation offered through a drug store promotion.

You understand, right?

The most interesting item I picked up this week is one that's been listed on eBay for quite some time. After passing it by many times, I finally decided that I needed it in my collection.

What you see is the unfolded and unglued LP cover of the 1973 Jerry Whitman Sing Songs From The Misterogers TV Show LP. Even more interesting is the fact that this piece came complete with the original negatives used in the album's printing process!

(Pardon my reflection)

When I say "all things Mister Rogers," I mean ALL things Mister Rogers! :)

Lastly, thanks to those of you who have submitted your suggested updates to the site after proofreading various groups of episodes. If you signed up to proofread some episodes and haven't submitted your suggestions yet, please do so by the end of this month if possible. Your help is greatly appreciated!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5155808471225067387.post-81182242782778645102018-01-16T17:49:00.002-06:002018-01-16T18:00:47.292-06:00"Won't You Be My Neighbor" Documentary UpdateHere we go, neighbors! When I decided to bring the blog back to the Neighborhood Archive, I had a feeling that there'd be plenty of opportunities for sharing news and announcements involving the 50th anniversary of the Neighborhood. Consider this to be the first of what's likely to be many to come...

A few days ago, a new Twitter account launched with its first two tweets of any significance coming today.

One of the two tweets today shared a sneak peek of the highly anticipated documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor which is set to premiere this week at Sundance. The other was a retweet sharing an Entertainment Weekly article about this clip.

If this clip is any indication, there should be plenty of excitement around the debut of this documentary! Check out some of that behind-the-scenes footage!

And did you notice the profile picture used by the Twitter account?

Yeah. That's one of the images unearthed when I met with David Smith (former Neighborhood Assistant Art Director) a few years ago. I can't say I'm completely responsible for "discovering" this image, but after years of digging through Mister Rogers material, I'd never seen it until then.

Either way, I was actually asked to share a different image with the folks who made this film and I'm quite curious to see if it made the final cut. We'll see soon enough!

I guess this should come as no surprise considering the longevity of most of the Neighborhood's regular characters, but still, take a look at Nick Failla giving a haircut to Mister Rogers in 1973 (Episode 1262) and then again almost twenty years later in 1991 (Episode 1634).

Always on the lookout for interesting background details in the Neighborhood, it was fun to discover the display in the back corner of Mr. Failla's 1973 barbershop -- a display for Ajax Unbreakable Pocket Combs.

Once I finished the run of Neighborhood episodes, I know I said I'd be taking a break until the end of the year...but as you can see from the "recent updates" section of the Archive site, that didn't happen.

The last few weeks have given me the chance to tie up some loose ends and take care of some stuff on the back end of the site. Some of those updates that you may not notice unless you look closely include...

Combining the "Cameos, mentions, etc" into one general list called "In Pop Culture and Beyond." Ultimately, I'd like to create an index on this site that is a sort of table of contents for anything that a browsing reader may be looking for. Maybe this page will be the springboard for that project-for-another-day. For those of you looking for something specific on the site, there's always the search bar at the top that is quite accurate.

I've cleaned up the page with links to purchase episodes through Amazon and also updated the Daniel Tiger episode pages for those episodes newly available for purchase.

Speaking of Daniel Tiger, I added the stragegy taught in each episode underneath each episode's title on the episode index page. I figured this would be a convenience for anyone simply browsing the episodes and not looking for a specific strategy.

Also, I'm FINALLY caught up on the Daniel Tiger episode summaries. I'd been holding off on those since last May as I wanted to make my way through the run of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood first. It's such a good feeling to be completely up to date on both!

. . .

In an average month, I tend to make 12-15 updates to the Archive site. Looking back at these last two months, I made 56 in November and 48 in December.

Whoa.

. . .

The Neighborhood Archive had a nice mention recently in the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette. Here's to 2018! I couldn't be more excited for all that is in store!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5155808471225067387.post-16913076442707778782017-12-24T13:41:00.000-06:002017-12-24T13:41:29.272-06:00The Neighborhood Archive Blog ReturnsWhen the Neighborhood Archive debuted nine years ago today, it was in the format of a humble blog with coverage of various topics in no particular order and organized in no way at all. Over the next few years, the Archive evolved into the site that it is today -- organized, cross-referenced, and detailed. As social media sites became the hub of discussion and commentary, the blog was ultimately phased out in September of 2013. Since then, the site has continued to grow with no signs of slowing down any time soon -- but I have to admit, I've missed the ability offered by the blog to share commentary and random bits of news that don't necessarily justify an acutal page on the site.

So, Happy Holidays, neighbors! After four years, the blog is returning to the Neighborhood Archive! I don't know how regular posts will be to the blog, but as they appear, I will include them on the main page of the Neighborhood Archive site under the section listing recent updates. There will be a lot to cover this year from Fred Rogers' 90th birthday and the Neighborhood's 50th anniversary to brand new book and film releases.

As for the Neighborhood Archive site itself, we'll be celebrating our 10th year online while I take the information gathered from the 895 episodes to complete the character pages and move into a section detailing the various Neighborhood locations. Of course, I'll continue hunting down Neighborhood trivia and memorabilia to share including many items I've been sitting on while I completed the run of episodes. The podcast is always something that has taken a back seat to other parts of this site, but I'd love to breathe new life into it this year with conversation with former Neighborhood cast/crew members as well as with some of you regarding your thoughts on various Neighborhood topics. In addition to a new season of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, I also hope to increase my efforts to learn more about the Children's Corner and the Neighborhood prior to its national run.

There is so much to look forward to as we say goodbye to 2017 and enter the new year! I hope you'll follow along as we celebrate, remember, and continue to build this online archive of all things Mister Rogers!
